FROM THE FACULTY

Friday’s Mock Assembly has received lots of positive feedback and the Dinner and Closing Service were a good time of fellowship. We were very grateful to receive a nativity scene as a gift for the chapel from the exiting Candidates. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and our best wishes go to all the students who have now finished. Our thanks also go to those who helped to bring the day’s events together, in particular, Suzanne Stanton, Ellie Ellia and the Student Association, Joanne Stokes, Ben Myers, Jane Fry, William Emilsen and Gerard Moore.

Ben has an essay on “Karl Barth’s Theology in Australia” in the new volume, Dogmatics after Barth: Facing Challenges in Church, Society, and the Academy, ed. Bruce McCormack and Gunter Thomas.

On the weekend, PhD student Janice Rees was interviewed by John Cleary on ABC Sydney’s Sunday Nights programme, discussing gender and sexism in the church: http://www.abc.net.au/sundaynights/

Ben recently gave a five-week sermon series on the Gospel of John at Terrigal Uniting Church. The sermons are available online, in audio and video: http://www.faith-theology.com/2012/10/gospel-of-john-audio-sermons.html

PhD student Steve Wright has an article in the new issue of _Heythrop Journal_: “The Creator Sings: A Wesleyan Rethinking of Transcendence with Robert Jenson”.

FROM THE FACULTY

The latest edition of the Canadian liturgical journal Celebrate! contains an article by Gerard, “More than a crib: the Christmas collects”, along with a commentary on each of the Sunday collects for Ordinary Time (Sundays 27 to the feast of Christ the King), Advent and Christmas.

The latest issue of Eternity includes an article profiling Helen Sloan and her CSU School of Theology experience. We also congratulate Helen on her recent engagement to Chris Paine. They are to be married in mid-January 2013.

Clive attended the Kenosis conference / workshop on mission which was held in Singapore. He is the only non-western person part of this group.  One of the papers presented was by the Principal of the theological college in Ulanbataar. He explained how the church had emerged in Mongolia following perestroika and the collapse of the Communist regime. The impetus came from a group of about 20 young urban professionals who were searching for an intellectual frame of reference for life following their loss of atheism. They were also on the lookout for a system of beliefs which had moral and relational consequences. Puje is an extraordinarily likable and impressive man. One other speaker was from the desk of mission and evangelism in the World Council of Churches. He referred to the Christian faith now being centred in the non-western world (70%). There were frequent comments throughout the conference / workshop how the western church clings to its power and so many of its missional strategies today are defence mechanisms. They were particularly sensitive to how much leadership is driven in the church by a white leadership. His was a very powerful address.

Clive’s article on ‘Constructing a Public Missiology’ has been published in the second volume of Kenosis (October 2012).

One last thought from Korea. Rosalie’s singing of Ariran when we hosted the PCK Assembly members back in February is still remembered! We should have released it on You Tube. At the opening service for the PCK Assembly the same tune (but without the guitars and Rosalie and her Korean admirers swaying arms) was the processional music for past moderators.

Clive will also be speaking in Bathurst on Friday 2 November, 6.30pm on “Twittering: the Christian faith and social media” and Saturday 3 November, 9.30am on “The Coming of Christ”: Luke’s version (with an exercise on constructing a Christmas narrative for your congregation).
