UPCOMING EVENTS

Tribute to the late Rev Malcolm Macleod - TODAY - Tuesday 26 March, 2.45pm  - at the Community afternoon tea, the College and Centre for Ministry will be hosting a ceremony in recognition of the late Rev Malcolm Macleod, who was instrumental in the development of the Centre and a leader in the life of the College. All are welcome.

Climate Commission Forum, TODAY -Tuesday 26 March, 6.30-8.00pm, Room G4, Centre for Ministry - come and join other community leaders at a presentation about the links between climate change and extreme weather events. Authors of the Climate Commission’s latest report, The Angry Summer, Professor Will Steffen and Professor Lesley Hughes will speak on how changing climate is increasing the frequency and severity of extreme events and what the future may look like. The forum will provide an opportunity for questions and to share perspectives. Register for the event at christine.aldred@climatechange.gov.au or phone 6159 7814.

Retreat - on Wednesday 27th March 9.30am-3.30pm at the CFM, the College will be having its annual Retreat with guest speaker, Jan Sutch-Pickard.

David M Gunn, Friday 5 April, 1.30pm at the Centre for Ministry - David is a leading literary-critical author/co-author of books which provide analyses of biblical narratives, feminist interpretation, and the cultural history (verbal and visual) of the Bible – its reception or use and influence. His writings provide a road map for acquainting readers with narrative criticism of the Bible.

Cross-Cultural Orientation,18-19 April, led by Katalina Tahaafe-Williams - contact Student Admin if you plan to attend this orientation.

Chapel this Wednesday 27th is from 11.30am-12.45pm and will be held in the indoor chapel. This week’s lectionary remembers Holy Week. The service is followed by Community lunch - all are welcome to this time of worship and fellowship.

Pasifika Orientation - Wednesday 29th May, 7.00-9.30pm

Census Date - Wednesday 27 March - please note this is the last date for automatic withdrawal from subjects, for domestic students withdrawing to receive a refund of their fees, and to apply for a Leave of Absence.

Flu Vaccinations - CSU are prepared to organized vaccinations for the flu for CSU students and staff if we get a minimum of 15 people interested. Registered nurses come on site on a specified date (yet to be determined) to administer the shots. The cost is $10. Any CSU student or faculty member who is interested in getting the flu vaccination here on site for $10, please contact Joanne Stokes by this Thursday 28th March, so we can determine numbers and make a booking.

Getting connected to your university

Transition to University, Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th April, 9.00am-4.00pm at UTC - CSU will be holding a two day course on preparation for and transition to university. The two day course will cover the following important topics:

  • Academic expectations
  • University culture and structure
  • Support systems to help you
  • Reading and writing skills necessary for university study
  • Learning to think critically (a very important skill)
  • On-line learning strategies
Writers’ Workshop, Monday 8 April, 9.00am-4.00pm - UTC will be running a Writers’ Workshop covering the following topics:

  • Essay structure
  • The basics of writing
  • Academic argument
  • Analysing essay questions
  • Referencing and plagiarism
Registration for both workshops is essential. Please contact Sef Carroll secarroll@csu.edu.au or phone Student Admin on 8838 8914 to secure a place.

For Sale - the library has a couple of laptops and a number of monitors which will be made available for purchase in the near future. If you are interested in purchasing one, please see the Library staff.

Introduction to Referencing Workshops - you are welcome to join workshops which will be held in the library computer room on the following dates:

  • Mondays from 5.00-6.00pm - March 25, April 22, May 29 and May 6
  • Thursdays from 5.00-6.00pm - April 4, May 2 and May 9
One to one help is also available by booking time through the library circulation desk.

PhD Awarded
Congratulations to Katalina Tahaafe-Williams, whose University of Birmingham PhD thesis was passed recently. The thesis is titled “Multicultural Church? Multicultural Ministry as the Tool for Building a Multicultural Church.” Katalina will be receiving her PhD at a graduation ceremony in July.
FROM THE CHAPEL
Chapel this Wednesday 20th is from 11.30am-12.45pm and will be held in the outdoor chapel, weather permitting. Lectionary (24th) remembers Passion Sunday and the readings are: Isaiah 50:4-9a, Psalm 31:9-16, Philippians 2:5-11, Luke 22:14-23; 56 or Luke 23:1-49. Please bring sun protection. FROM THE FACULTY

Welcome back to all our students as lectures now commence - we trust this will be a fulfilling year of learning.

On Monday the first gathering of the new College Council will meet. Please remember to pray for those who serve on the UTC Council. The Chair is Ross Chambers, who was until recently Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) for Charles Sturt University.

Research Seminars

The first seminars will be held on Friday 15 March in G3.

Programme:

11.00-12.00       John Williams on The energetic spirit of life and the rise of Homo Energos.

12.00-12.45       Sam Amosa on Faavae le Atua Samoa (Samoa is founded on God): A theological interrogation of the Samoan motto for Samoa and Samoans in diaspora.

12.45-1.30         Mereia Votomosi on Luke-Acts: Using social memory theories for an
analysis of Theophilus’ human progressive responses to discover the truth about Luke’s portrait of the risen Christ.

2.30-4.30            Brendan Pratt on Christianity and advanced consumer culture in Australia: Towards a response to cultural constructs of consumption that impact faith development. Case Study: The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Greater Sydney.

Publications

·         Three of our PhD students have had new publications this week:

·         Ian Packer has co-edited (with Gordon Preece) a new volume titled Bonhoeffer Down Under (ATF Press).

·         Damian Palmer has an essay titled "Disability: Consider the Crepe Myrtle", in the new book Speaking Differently: Essays in Theological Anthropology (Barton Books).

·         Janice Rees has an essay titled "Gender: Difference, Sin and the Trinity", in the same book.
 

Out and About

Ben Myers visited Adelaide last week to give the commencement lecture for St Barnabas' Theological College. He preached in the opening service at St Peter's Cathedral, and then presented a public lecture on "Rowan Williams and Theology in the Public Square." Ben will also be heading back to Adelaide later in the year to lead the Bible studies for the Uniting Church's SA Synod.

Clive Pearson will represent the College at the annual Affinity (Muslim) Gala Dinner on 13 March. He has been leading a series of 4 studies on Luke for the Hornsby congregation and facilitating discussions on the Bible, sexuality and leadership for another congregation.
 

UPCOMING EVENTS

THIS SATURDAY: Student Big Day Out (BBQ Lunch), 9 March, 9.00am-3.00pm - at the Centre for Ministry. This is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to bring family, catch up with each other as we begin the New Year and most importantly, to get to know the new students who have joined UTC. All welcome. Hosted by the Candidates, please RSVP to Student Administration if you plan to attend.

College Retreat, Wednesday 27 March - Guest Speaker: Jan Sutch-Pickard. Jan is a writer and storyteller living on the Isle of Mull, a member of the dispersed Iona Community for 15 years, Vice-President of the Methodist Conference in 1996-97 and a Methodist lay preacher. Much of her working life Jan has been as an editor and she has written several books (including Gatherings, Dandelions and Thistles and Advent Readings from Iona). Jan is engaged with a number of justice and peace issues (demonstrating against Trident, Amnesty campaigns, and raising awareness of the Israel/Palestine situation).

Pacific Island Orientation (scheduled for Wed 13 Mar, 7.00pm) - has been postponed. More details shortly.

Scholarships - Applications for Undergraduate and Continuing Education Scholarships for first session are now available. Closing date: Friday 22 March. For an application form with further information, please see Student Admin for an undergraduate application form, or contact umeinfo@nsw.uca.org.au for a continuing education scholarship form.

Subject Enrolments - students have until 5pm Friday 8 March to add themselves into any subjects for first semester without incurring late fees of $50 per subject. Students can still delete subjects up until the Census Date Wed 27 March, however please confirm your enrolment as soon as possible. Enquiries to Renee or Jenny in Student Admin.

FROM THE STUDENT ASSOCIATION

First Annual Meeting of the Student Association for 2013, Thursday 14 March, 5pm - all students are encouraged to attend the first meeting for 2013 of the Student Association. This is a great chance to meet other students as well as understand the role of the Student Association. The meeting will be held in G2.
 

FROM THE SENIOR STUDENT

The Senior Student, Suzanne Stanton, will be available to discuss with students any concerns or needs every Thursday during semester from 1.00pm until 4.00pm. She will be located in the All Saints Room in the library.
