Welcome
back to all our students as lectures now commence - we trust this will be a
fulfilling year of learning.
On
Monday the first gathering of the new College Council will meet. Please
remember to pray for those who serve on the UTC Council. The Chair is Ross
Chambers, who was until recently Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) for Charles
Sturt University.
Research Seminars
The first seminars will be
held on Friday 15 March in G3.

11.00-12.00 John Williams on The energetic spirit of life and the rise of Homo Energos.
12.00-12.45 Sam Amosa on Faavae le Atua Samoa (Samoa is founded on God): A theological
interrogation of the Samoan motto for Samoa and Samoans in diaspora.
12.45-1.30 Mereia Votomosi on Luke-Acts: Using social memory theories for an
analysis of Theophilus’ human progressive responses to discover the truth about Luke’s portrait of the risen Christ.
2.30-4.30 Brendan Pratt on Christianity and advanced consumer culture
in Australia: Towards a response to cultural constructs of consumption that
impact faith development. Case Study: The Seventh-day Adventist Church in
Greater Sydney.

Three
of our PhD students have had new publications this week:

Ian
Packer has co-edited (with Gordon Preece) a new volume titled Bonhoeffer Down
Under (ATF Press).

Damian
Palmer has an essay titled "Disability: Consider the Crepe Myrtle",
in the new book Speaking Differently:
Essays in Theological Anthropology (Barton Books).
·
Janice
Rees has an essay titled "Gender: Difference, Sin and the Trinity",
in the same book.
Out and About
Ben
Myers visited Adelaide last week to give the commencement lecture for St
Barnabas' Theological College. He preached in the opening service at St Peter's
Cathedral, and then presented a public lecture on "Rowan Williams and
Theology in the Public Square." Ben will also be heading back to Adelaide
later in the year to lead the Bible studies for the Uniting Church's SA Synod.
Clive
Pearson will represent the College at the annual Affinity (Muslim) Gala Dinner
on 13 March. He has been leading a series of 4 studies on Luke for the Hornsby
congregation and facilitating discussions on the Bible, sexuality and
leadership for another congregation.
UPCOMING EVENTS
THIS SATURDAY:
Student Big Day Out (BBQ Lunch), 9 March, 9.00am-3.00pm - at the Centre for
Ministry. This is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to bring
family, catch up with each other as we begin the New Year and most importantly,
to get to know the new students who have joined UTC. All welcome. Hosted by the

College Retreat, Wednesday 27 March - Guest Speaker: Jan Sutch-Pickard. Jan is a writer and storyteller living on the Isle of Mull, a member of the dispersed Iona Community for 15 years, Vice-President of the Methodist Conference in 1996-97 and a Methodist lay preacher. Much of her working life Jan has been as an editor and she has written several books (including Gatherings, Dandelions and Thistles and Advent Readings from Iona). Jan is engaged with a number of justice and peace issues (demonstrating against Trident, Amnesty campaigns, and raising awareness of the Israel/Palestine situation).
David M Gunn, Friday 5 April, 1.30pm
at the Centre for Ministry
- David is a leading literary-critical
author/co-author of books which provide analyses of biblical narratives, feminist interpretation,
and the cultural history (verbal and visual) of the Bible – its reception or
use and influence. His writings provide a road
map for acquainting readers with narrative criticism of the Bible.

ADMINISTRATION
Pacific Island Orientation (scheduled
for Wed 13 Mar, 7.00pm) - has been postponed. More details shortly.
Scholarships - Applications for
Undergraduate and Continuing Education Scholarships for first session are now
available. Closing date: Friday 22 March. For an application form with further
information, please see Student Admin for an undergraduate application form, or
contact umeinfo@nsw.uca.org.au
for a continuing education scholarship form.
Subject Enrolments - students have until 5pm
Friday 8 March to add themselves into any subjects for first semester without
incurring late fees of $50 per subject. Students can still delete subjects up
until the Census Date Wed 27 March, however please confirm your enrolment as
soon as possible. Enquiries to Renee or Jenny in Student Admin.
Census Date - Wednesday 27 March - please note this is the
last date for automatic withdrawal from subjects, for domestic students
withdrawing to receive a refund of their fees, and to apply for a Leave of
Absence.
Pizza Night, Thursdays - will now be held
Thursdays from 5.30pm - come and join the fellowship. Cost is $5.00 per person
weekly.
Community Afternoon Tea, Tuesdays - this community gathering
(previously Friday mornings) will now be held on Tuesdays afternoons commencing
at 2.45pm, to allow as many people as possible to attend. All welcome.

New Books - the new books purchased by the
library during February are now on display opposite the circulation desk in the
library and are available for loan. Several of them will be highlighted on the
library website over the next few weeks. If you are interested in borrowing or
viewing any of these (or any of the other resources in the library) please

ASSOCIATION
First Annual Meeting
of the Student Association for 2013, Thursday 14 March, 5pm - all students are
encouraged to attend the first meeting for 2013 of the Student Association.
This is a great chance to meet other students as well as understand the role of
the Student Association. The meeting will be held in G2.

The Senior Student, Suzanne Stanton,
will be available to discuss with students any concerns or needs every Thursday
during semester from 1.00pm until 4.00pm. She will be located in the All Saints
Room in the library.

According to the charter of the Student Association, “the Senior Student
is appointed to represent the Student Association in its dealings with the
Principal and other relevant bodies, be involved in pastoral oversight of
students and consult with the Principal about the day to day running of the
college.”
