ALTERNATIVE GIFT IDEAS FOR CHRISTMAS!

If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
1 John 3:17-18

If you’re looking to escape the Christmas shopping merry-go-round of consumerism and commercialised materialistic gift giving, then brace yourselves for a new type of gifting. One that gives the gift of giving to those around you.

It's a simple concept called Charity Gifting and the way it works is you purchase a gift or make a donation to a charity on behalf of someone else. The nature of these gifts vary from a goat or chicken bought on behalf of a family overseas, to hand crafted gifts made by organisations providing gainful employment to those in need.

The significance of charity gifts is three fold, firstly you get to satisfy the Christmas convention of gift giving, second the money used to purchase your gift directly benefits some of the world's poorest and third you are given the opportunity to raise social awareness amongst your loved ones of the world wide importance of such a gift.

At times it may seem to your giftee's that there is 'nothing in it for them' but here's what makes the charity gift a truly life changing concept when the giftee realises that the gift you are giving them is the gift of 'giving' to others.

Below we've listed alternative ways which you can give gifts that truly change people's lives for the better and also raises social awareness about the needs of others.

Uniting World 'everything in common' browse the catalogue to purchase gifts that assist with relief development projects from West Papua to Zimbabwe https://www.everythingincommon.com.au/uwrd/catalogue/19

TEAR Australia 'useful gifts' you can purchase gifts including livestock, seeds, small business start up, school packs etc http://www.usefulgifts.org/

Tribes & Nations have a great range of fair trade gift ideas from earrings to handbags and homewares. http://www.tribesandnations.com.au/store.aspx

Care Australia 'Life changing gifts' buy a gift that changes a person's life. These include clean drinking water, live stock, setting up savings accounts http://caregifts.org.au/

Oxfam Unwrapped gives you the opportunity to purchase goats on behalf of your loved ones for families and villages overseas dependant on livestock for survival. http://www.oxfamunwrapped.com.au/Product.php?productid=94

Fred Hollows 'Gift of Sight' why not purchase a gift of sight card on behalf of your loved ones which pays for specialist eye surgery for those unable to afford or access eye care https://www.hollows.org.au/donate/gift-of-sight

Toms Shoes 'One for One' for every pair of shoes you purchase, Tom's gives a pair to a child in need http://www.toms.com/international/

Water Aid Australia 'give the gift of water' - when you buy a gift from wateraid you'll be helping some of the world's poorest gain access to safe, clean water, sanitary toilets and basic hygene https://shop.wateraidaustralia.org/

Royal Flying Doctor Service - dontate to the RFDS on behalf of a friend and provide much needed medical services to rural communities http://www.flyingdoctor.org.au/How-You-Can-Help/

There are so many other charity gift examples out there but we hope these at least gives you some idea of alternative ways to spend your Christmas dollars which can give light, life and hope to those most in need.

"The generous man enriches himself by giving; the miser hoards himself poor" Dutch proverb

Til next time!
