FROM THE FACULTY

The Opening Ceremony and orientation held on Monday was a great time of worship, fellowship and learning, as we participated in the day’s proceedings and Dr Jeff Aernie presented his lecture on Paul, the gospel and Christian identity.

We look forward to classes commencing next Monday 4th March and encourage you to speak with faculty or Student Administration if you have any concerns as we commence the new academic year.

Research Seminars

The first seminars will be on Friday 15 March from 10am-4.30pm in G3. Presenters for the day are John Williams, Brendan Pratt, Mereia Votomosi, Sam Amosa and Alison Cooke.

Publications
·        William Emilsen (editor) - the latest edition of Uniting Church Studies is now available. This edition focuses on faith and atheism. Copies available for purchase from Student Admin. Cost $22.50.

Connections
·         William Emilsen - met with Muslim delegates from North Africa and Dr Derya Iner people from the Islamic Sciences and Research Academy of Australia (ISRA).

Scholarships - Applications for Undergraduate and Continuing Education Scholarships for first session are available from Monday 11 February. Closing date: Friday 22 March. For an application form with further information, please see Student Admin for an undergraduate application form, or contact umeinfo@nsw.uca.org.au for a continuing education scholarship form.

Census Date - Wednesday 27 March - please note this is the last date for automatic withdrawal from subjects, for domestic students withdrawing to receive a refund of their fees, and to apply for a Leave of Absence.

Academic Timetable - the timetable has been updated to reflect the new Census Date. If you have any question regarding the timetable, please contact Joanne Stokes, joannes@nsw.uca.org.au or 8838 8967.

Pizza Night, Thursdays - will now be held Thursdays from 5.30pm - come and join the fellowship. Cost is $5.00 per person weekly.

Community Afternoon Tea, Tuesdays - this community gathering (previously Friday mornings) will now be held on Tuesdays afternoons commencing at 2.45pm, to allow as many people as possible to attend. All welcome.

THL421 Principles of Church Leadership will run as an Intensive on 8-9 Mar, 4-6 Apr, 2-4 May and is designed to help you grow leadership capacity in a church context.

THL230 The Practice of Cross Cultural Ministry will be offered as an Intensive in 3rd semester 2013 instead of first semester. Contact Student Admin for further information on the Intensives.

PUBLICATIONS

·         Ben Myers - the Guardian newspaper in London recently listed Ben’s latest book, Christ the Stranger, as one of the best books of 2012. The book was also chosen by the American magazine The Christian Century as one of the best 100 books in religion and philosophy for 2012. The book has had a lot of positive reviews lately, and has been used by a number of church reading groups and book clubs in Australia and elsewhere.


·        Clive Pearson - What we do in ordinary time matters in Building Communities of Reconciliation: Volume 2: Christian Responses to Situations of Conflict,  Ed. Richard Noake and Pauline C.H. Kollotai, Seoul, Nanusma,  pp. 27-44.

·         Jione Havea - is writing a bible study on Genesis 2:4b-17 (currently titled "Do just this: Protect life") for the 2013 WCC Assembly (Busan, Korea). The theme for the Assembly is "God of life, lead us to justice and peace". Jione is one of six people preparing the bible studies.

·         Jione's first publication for 2013 is out -- "Death roots: Musings of a Pacific island native" in Pacific Identities and Well-being: Cross-cultural Perspectives edited by Margaret Nelson Agee, Tracey McIntosh, Philip Culbertson and Cabrini 'Ofa Makasiale (New York: Routledge, 2013; 157-68)
 

CONNECTIONS

Ben Myers - in December Ben did some lecturing at Fuller Theological Seminary in California, and also enjoyed preaching on the Magnificat at a large evangelical church in California. More recently, he's led worship services at Terrigal Uniting Church and preached at St Alban's Anglican Church in Epping.

Last Friday 8th Feb, the College hosted a group from the Islamic Sciences and Research Academy (ISRA), continuing discussions in interfaith dialogue and our joint relationship within CSU’s Faculty of Arts programme.

Clive Pearson - led a workshop at Springwood Church on scripture, leadership and same sex relationships.
