Four weeks of classes left!  A reminder that tasks are due in on time, or an extension request must be completed.  As well, lecturers should have essays returned within the specified time: see you subject outline for details.

WELCOME TO VISITORS

FROM THE ACADEMIC DESK
Publications aplenty this week, including three from our doctoral students.

Ben Myers discusses Rob Bell's new book, Love Wins, in this week's edition of the Christian newspaper,  Eternity (copies available in the atrium)

PhD student Ian Packer has published the essay "An immodest proposal for the practice of the Lord's table" in the volume, Beyond 400: Exploring Baptist Futures, edited by David Cohen and Michael Parsons (Pickwick Publications).

PhD student Steve Wright has a new article in one of the world's most prestigious theology journals, The Heythrop Journal. His article is titled "The Creator Sings: A Wesleyan Rethinking of Transcendence with Robert Jenson" - it's available online through the library's journal databases.

PhD student Damian Palmer has an article in the new special issue of Uniting Church Studies, titled "Learning from 'Eminent Pagans': Calvin and the Secular Authors".

THE SYNOD
Every blessing to all those participating in the Synod of the New South Wales and ACT Uniting Church, running from Friday 23rd till Tuesday 27th.  For details see http://nsw.uca.org.au/synodmeeting/media.htm .  Many of our faculty and students are engaged with the Synod.

JUSTICE CORNER
Building Bridges, Not Walls: Prisons and the justice system , the 2011 Social Justice Statement of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference has just been released.  There is a statement, prayer cards posters and a website.  To download the statement call up http://www.catholic.org.au/ and look to the page for the link to the Social Justice Statement.

CHRISTIAN MEDITATION
Our series of meditations continues. Each session commences with some breathing exercises, followed by a guided meditation.  At present we are learning Ignation meditation, a form of prayer using imagination and the Gospels.  The dates and times are

  • The Uniting Church in Australia, Synod of NSW & ACT: Cross Cultural Gathering Weave Us Together Friday 4 to Sunday 6 November, 2011 featuring Special Guests: Bishop Dr. Daniel Iagarajah, who will be conducting Bible studies, and the Rev. Dr. Brian Brown, who will be preaching on the Sunday and leading the communion service.
