Out and About

On Sunday Ben presented a keynote address at the Ecclesia and Ethics conference, an eco-friendly online conference that brings together Christian scholars from around the world. His paper was titled "The ethics of looking: patristic reflections on the cyber gaze", and it will be published later this year in a volume with T&T Clark.

Ben spoke at "God at the Fringe," a concert event at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
The event was an evangelistic initiative of the SA Synod. It featured performances of gospel music together with a presentation of the gospel message and an opportunity for people to respond.

Publications

The 2013 UTC Inaugural Lecture will be published as "Participation in Christ: An Analysis of Pauline Soteriology" Horizons in Biblical Theology.

Postcolonial engagement: Politics, Religions, Scriptures

This conference will explore ways of thinking and being postcolonial in colonial surroundings.

What legacies of colonization linger in the decisions, practices and events in and around our societies, faith communities, scriptures and nations? How might we engage the colonialist tendencies and blind-spots that drive the machineries of politics, economics, services, religions and scriptures? How might we live, interact, believe and read post colonially in our colonial and invaded contexts?

Census date is fast approaching – Friday the 28^th of March!! 

All students MUST ensure that they have made final deletion to their enrolments for first session this year no later than Thursday the 27^th of March to ensure that you are not charged for a subject you do not intend to study. 

ALL STUDENTS WHO HAVE TO PAY FOR THEIR COURSE MUST MAKE FINAL PAYMENT DIRECT TO CSU NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY 26^TH OF MARCH, this should ensure that CSU receive the payment by Census date.

UME Scholarships are still open until Tuesday the 25^th of March.

Study Skills is held every Tuesday and Thursday during class time.  If you are interested in attending, please come and speak with Jenny or Renee in student administration and we can put your name on a waiting list.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

Northmead Creative and Performing Arts High School (CAPAHS) and Northmead Uniting Church, in a cooperative venture, invite you to a very special exhibition involving 15 of Australia’s leading artists (including Blake and Archibald Prize winners) who interpret the 14 traditional Franciscan Stations of the Cross (Jesus' journey to his crucifixion) and 1 station of Resurrection.

The exhibition will be opened by Joanna Capon OAM Friday 4 April, 6.30pm – 8.30pm.

The exhibition runs 5-20 April 10am-4pm at Northmead CAPAHS, Campbell Street, Northmead.

Please come and bring your friends to this special event.

There will be guided tours of the exhibition on weekend days plus Good Friday at 2pm or by appointment.

The Biennial Conference in Philosophy, Religion and Culture will take place 4 – 5 October 2014

Theme: FAITH AND THE POLITICAL

The theme is to be interpreted broadly and from the disciplines of philosophy, theology, history, social science, literature and the arts.  Topics that might be investigated include: scandal in/of Christianity; structures of belief and opinion; secularisation, fundamentalism and inculturation; politics in the Bible and the Bible in politics; religion in the public forum; Christian ethics in a liberal democracy; liberation and equality.

The conference specifically aims to foster interaction between scholars in the universities and scholars in theological colleges.  It also encourages young scholars.

Keynote Speaker: Peter Forrest: The Epistemology of Scandal

'How can you continue to believe in the face of scandals?'. This question is not, I submit, merely a manifestation of the ad hominem fallacy exemplified by, "How can you take Frege seriously when he was a bigot?' Nor can it be dismissed by noting that the reality of sin is a central Christian doctrine.  I argue that 'right reason' requires not merely the rational assessment of doctrines but a way of deciding which doctrines to assess. Scandal undermines the appeal to authority when assessing but not the reliance on traditions when deciding what to assess. As a consequence, scandal tends to undermine 'simple faith' and mandates the, not necessarily academic, philosophical reflection on faith.
