UTC eNews 201230 July Break Week 5

There is some news about the College as classes are almost upon us.  Ben Myers has returned from study leave and is a welcome return to the corridors and classrooms.  As well, Clive Pearson is now on leave till the end of December.  In his absence the role of College Principal is being undertaken by the two current Vice Principals, Carolyn Thornley (Ecclesial) and Gerard Moore (Academic).  Clive’s role as Head of School has been assumed by Gerard Moore as Acting Head of School.

FROM THE ACADEMIC DESK
We are very glad to welcome Jenny Stockton to the UTC team this week (Jenny will be transferring from her role as Uniting Venues Receptionist over the coming weeks). Jenny takes on the role of part-time Student Administrator along with Renee, as Joanne will assume the role of Courses Administration Officer, with Itu leaving this Wednesday to pursue new opportunities.

The Third Annual Post Graduate Research Conference will be held 25-26 September at the Australian Catholic University Strathfield Campus. The conference is a collaborative project sponsored by the Australian College of Theology, Australian Catholic University, Charles Sturt University, MCD University of Divinity and Sydney College of Divinity. UTC is a member of the South Pacific Association of Theological Schools (SPATS) and Clive Pearson will be visiting Kiribati in July to be part of the Accreditation Commission Team to the Tanginitebu Theological College.

UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE COLLEGE

This Sunday, 8 July 2012, 3pm - Book Launch of Professor Bruce Mansfield’s Summer is Almost Over at the Centre for Ministry. Summer is Almost Over is a personal account of Bruce’s ideas behind the Reformation History courses he conducted at Sydney and Macquarie Universities.

Next Wednesday, 11 July 2012, 7.30pm - Lecture by Professor Paul Dafydd Jones on “Patience and passion – Christian theology after Karl Barth” at the Centre for Ministry. Paul has written numerous articles and essays on systematic, political, and constructive theology. The lecture will be followed by a response by Matthew Wilcoxen and the evening will be chaired by Ben Myers.

Seminar with Professor Marcia Bunge on Tuesday 24 July, 1.30-3.00pm in G3please note that all students are encouraged to attend this seminar. Please RSVP the College Secretary, suzannec@nsw.uca.org.au.  Professor Bunge serves on the international board of the Child Theology Movement (www.childtheology.org) and steering committees of the American Academy of Religion. She is the Director of “The Child in Religion and Ethics Project. Her current area of research is religious understandings of children and childhood and she has edited or co-edited four volumes on the subject. The public lecture is from 7.30 pm.

Rev Harry Herbert’s “Director’s Cut” Farewell will be held 2 August 2012, 4.30-7.00pm at the CFM. Rev Herbert is a strong public voice on issues of injustice and actively advocates on behalf of service users of UnitingCare.
